An Excellent First Edition of Tom Sawyer

Mark Twain. The Adventures of Tom Sawyer. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1876. First American edition, first printing with points: printed on wove paper (flyleaves on laid paper); versos of half-title and preface blank. Issued some six months after the Chatto and Windus's London edition. Octavo. [i-xi]xii-xiii[xiv-xv]xvi, [17]18-274[-276], [4]pages publisher's advertisements. Wood engraved frontispiece and numerous text vignettes by True Williams and others. Publisher's blue cloth, blocked and lettered in black and gilt. Plain edges. Professionally and skillfully refreshed at the spine, joints, and corners. The original boards are moderately soiled with touched-up gilt on the front board. The spine panel is darkened and the gilt blocking worn. The contents are slightly toned with moderate scattered soiling and thumbing throughout. A few pages with small areas of dampstaining. Endpapers with chipping along the edges. On the whole, a very good copy of this scarce American classic.

"The Adventures of Tom Sawyer is now thought of a juvenile classic, though when it was written, it was an attempt by Twain to appeal to the current vogue for local-color fiction. In contrast to his earlier satirical work, this is a nostalgic and sentimental story based on the author's own youth in an antebellum river town" (Lilly/Karanovich).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
