    Description

First Edition, Early Issue of Huck Finn

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.

First American edition, early issue, with the following points: the title-leaf is a cancel (Blanck's second state, the first state having never been seen in a printed book); on p. [13], the illustration "Him and Another Man" listed as being on p. 88 (Blanck's first state); on p. 57, "...with the was..." (Blanck's first state); on p. 155, the final "5" of the page number is wanting (Blanck's third state); the portrait frontispiece is Blanck's first state. Octavo. 366 pp. Portrait frontispiece inserted. Text illustrations by E.W. Kemble.

Publisher's original illustrated green cloth binding, blocked in gilt and black. Some rubbing and minor soiling to cloth. Spine ends have been expertly repaired. Previous owner's inscription on a preliminary leaf. Altogether, a very good attractive copy.

    BAL 3415. Johnson, Twain, p. 43. Grolier, 100 American, 87.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
