A Handsome Copy of the First Issue of Adventures of Huckleberry Finn

Mark Twain. Adventures of Huckleberry Finn (Tom Sawyer's Comrade). With One Hundred and Seventy-Four Illustrations. New York: Charles L. Webster and Company, 1885.

First American edition with the following first issue points, per BAL: "Him and another Man" with "88" on p. [13]; "with the was" on p. 57; final leaf blank; and frontispiece with "Heliotype Printing Company" and visible tablecloth. Also, "Huck Decided" instead of "Huck Decides" under "Chapter VI" on p. [9], a first issue point per MacDonnell (Firsts, p. 31). Title page a cancel; p. 283 on a stub, the earliest issue possible in the cloth-bound issue. The final "5" on p. 155 extends below the line, a later issue point in BAL which MacDonnell dismisses as being of no significance as far as issue priority (Firsts, p. 33). Octavo. 366 pages. Portrait frontispiece. Text illustrations by E. W. Kemble.

Publisher's full green cloth, front cover and spine decoratively stamped in black and gilt. Some mild wear to spine edges and lower corners, a few pages with mild creases to upper corners, not affecting text. Still, a near fine copy of this landmark novel with the earliest issue points. Housed in three-quarter calf clamshell case.

BAL 3415. Kevin MacDonnell in Firsts, September 1998 - Vol. 8, No. 9, "Huck Finn, Among the Issue Mongers," pp. 29- 35.
