S. edition, first printing with the text uncorrected at pages 9, 13 and 57, first state of the illustration on page 283 with the "curved fly." The copyright page is dated 1884. Page 155 with the final "5" extending below in the page number (no significance). Octavo. 366, pages. This copy with the inserted portrait frontispiece, BAL's second state. This copy bound without the publisher's rear blank. The portrait frontispiece is mounted onto a blank leaf. Bound to style in modern full brown calf, spine ruled in gilt, with burgundy and gilt morocco lettering labels. New plain endleaves, blanks; new tissue-guard at the portrait frontispiece. Some moderate wear to binding; frontispiece foxed, with corners chipped (covered by the blank its mounted on); half-title, title-page and page 353 with tape reinforcement at fore-edge; text toned; soiled, and foxed; a few leaves creased; some leaves near the end with marginal chipping.
