S. edition, first printing with the text uncorrected at pages 9, 13 and 57, first state of the illustration on page 283 with the "curved fly." The copyright page is dated 1884. Page 155 with the final "5" extending below in the page number (no significance). Octavo. 366, pages. This copy with the inserted portrait frontispiece, BAL's second state. This copy bound without the publisher's rear blank. The portrait frontispiece is worn at edges, with tears near the corners. Bound to style (of the publisher's sheep binding) in later full brown calf, spine ruled in gilt, with burgundy and blue cloth lettering labels. New plain endleaves, blanks; new tissue-guard at the portrait frontispiece. Some wear, soiling to binding; endleaves offset at edges; first several leaves creased; pages 151-154 (two conjugate leaves) loose, yet present, with string binding visible at gutter.
