First Edition of a Twain Classic

Mark Twain. A Tramp Abroad. Hartford: American Publishing Company, 1880. Illustrated by W. Fr. Brown, True Williams, B. Day and Other Artists - With Also Three or Four Pictures Made by the Author of This Book, Without Outside Help; in all Three Hundred and Twenty-Eight Illustrations. Hartford: The American Publishing Company, 1880.

First edition, early issue, with portrait frontispiece BAL state B, and first state illustrated frontispiece. Octavo. 631, [1, advertisement] pages. With inserted portrait frontispiece, illustrated frontispiece, and five plates. The other twenty-eight plates are reckoned in the pagination. Other illustrations in text.

Publisher's black cloth with decoratively gilt-stamped spine and gilt- and blind-stamped boards. Gilt on spine dulled a bit; minor rubbing to cloth at corners and spine ends. Front hinge starting; binding sturdy and square. Portrait frontispiece quite foxed, as usual. A fine, unsophisticated copy in a custom cloth slipcase.

Humorous non-fiction recounting Twain's trek across central and southern Europe.

    BAL 3386.
