"If we had nothing of Chagall but his Bible, he would be for us a great modern artist." -- Meyer Schapiro

Marc Chagall. Illustrations for the Bible by Marc Chagall. New York: Harcourt, Brace and Company, [1956].

First American edition. Folio. 105, plus four-page listing of illustrations. 117 gravure plates, plus sixteen color lithographs printed in twelve to eighteen impressions of color, composed expressly for this limited edition. Text by Jean Wahl, with an appreciation by Meyer Schapiro.

Original illustrated boards. Board edges worn; backstrip missing. Front board all but detached. Light foxing to page edges. Minor offsetting to endpapers. Partially perished dust jacket with the front flap detached but present. Contents remarkably bright and clean. The binding is in only good condition, but the vivid color lithograph plates (all present) are extraordinarily crisp and vibrant.

Commissioned in 1930 by art dealer Ambroise Vollard to execute illustrations for the Old Testament of the Bible, it was not until 1956 that Chagall finally completed what is considered one of the artist's greatest triumphs. Chagall, one of the premier Jewish artists of the modern age, said of this monumental work: "I did not see the Bible, I dreamed it. Ever since early childhood, I have been captivated by the Bible. It has always seemed to me and still seems today the greatest source of poetry of all time." A sumptuous collection of powerful and personal lyrical art.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
