With the Rare Map of The Republic of Texas

    T. G. Bradford. An Illustrated Atlas, Geographical, Statistical, and Historical, of the United States, and the Adjacent Countries. Philadelphia: E. S. Grant, [1838].

Folio. 170 pages. Thirty-nine hand-colored copper-engraved maps, which include a general map of North America, two maps of Canada, a double-page map of the United States, maps of all the states, five plans of various U.S. cities, the Republic of Texas, and the West Indies. Most maps are engraved by G. W. Boynton. Also featured is a picturesque hand-colored second title page beautifully engraved by James Archer.

Contemporary half leather over cloth boards. Marbled endpapers. Considerable wear and bumping to the binding. Overall, a very good, bright copy.

    T. G. Bradford, in 1835, had published a smaller and less detailed work, A Comprehensive Atlas. He expanded it into the Illustrated Atlas in 1838, printed in Boston, with this Philadelphia imprint appearing the same year. Walter William Ristow, in his American Maps and Mapmakers, writes: "Bradford's Illustrated Atlas was one of the first American general atlases to supplement the maps with lengthy geographical descriptions." The map of the Republic of Texas is divided by colonies and land grants. Though the colorist defined the southern boundary of the Republic of Texas as the Nueces River, the engraver has clearly placed the boundary at the Rio Grande.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
