A Mid-Sixteenth Century World Map by Peter Apianus

Peter Apianus (1495-1552), cartographer. Charta Cosmographica cum Ventorum Propria Natura et Operatione. Antwerp: [ca. 1553]. Approximately 8 x 12 inches. Upper and lower margins trimmed a bit close, some minor toning or soiling at margins, very light wrinkling, one central vertical crease. Very good. Matted, framed and glazed. This map from Cosmographia Petri Apiani.

    More Information:

Apianus (tutor of Mercator) published his landmark Cosmographia in 1524, but no map was included until 1544, when Grisius became editor. The continents in this map are based in part on Mercator's globe of 1541, but North America (labeled "Baccalearium" here) is shown as but a peninsula of (South) America. While there is not as much geographic detail as one would expect, this map shows animals, ships, and even a mermaid. South America is noted as having cannibals and giants. In the border surrounding the globe is the Zodiac, and around that is depicted the various winds and Zeus and Mars (Mars bears the crest of Charles V, the Holy Roman Emperor, on his armor).

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
