Second state with "Europe" engraved horizontally and the British Isles identified as "Angl" and "Scot." Early cordiform world map, including the Americas, from Apian's Cosmographia. One sheet, uncolored (8.6875 x 12.125 inches; 221 x 308 mm.). Uneven trimming to margins with long, narrow chip out of top edge. Four small repairs to upper edge of verso. Three faint vertical creases running length of map. Light age toning. Very good. One of the earliest world maps not derived from Ptolemy, and one of the first to show the Americas, with North America represented by a thin sliver of land called "Baccalearum." In a decorative border of illustrated figures representing the winds; scattered vignettes of ships, sea monsters, native peoples and fauna. An early cordiform projection. From 1529 on, Apian's Cosmographia or Cosmographicus Liber was edited by Gemma Frisius, one of the founders of the Belgian school of geography. Tooley pp. 18, 240; Sabin 1749.
