    Description

Map of Fort Totten with Documents for Fort Rowan. One sheet, 15.5" x 9.75", circa 1867, a plan of Fort Totten, New Bern, North Carolina. A hand drawn map done in pencil and ink, showing the layout of the fort, and includes the placements and weights of cannons, the location of guard houses, officer tents, and even the flag staff. Fort Totten was built in 1862 by Federal forces to protect New Bern, and named after War of 1812 and Civil War general Joseph Gilbert Totten. The fort aided the Union Army in controlling North Carolina's coasts and sounds, and they held the town of New Bern through the end of the war. Additionally there is a List of Artillery and Equipment on hand at Fort Totten, dated October 1, 1862.

Also included are two documents related to Fort Rowan, also located at New Bern, NC. The first is a Record of Target Practice, dated June 16, 1864. There is a Monthly Ordnance Return, dated October 31, 1864, which records the number and type of guns available. Fort Rowan, named for naval commander Stephen C. Rowan, was also built circa 1862-63 to protect the city of New Bern and to protect the rail lines that passed through the area.

Condition: Map is in very good condition, with flattened folds and very light toning. Other documents range from fine to good. All have folds and creases, with varying degrees of toning. One has dark staining at folds and bottom edge.
