Joseph Hutchins Colton. Map of the United States of America, the British Provinces, Mexico, the West Indies and Central America. With part of New Granada and Venezuela. New York: Published by J. H. Colton, 1853 [1854]. Colored, two-sheet map of North and Central America. Unjoined (37.5 x 46 inches; 952 x 1170 mm.). Loosely matted and backed, with fairly large chip out of margin at bottom left, hidden from view, image unaffected. Some toning beneath mats, less to exposed map surface. Soft crease, slightly darkened, running horizontal length of map across both sheets, with faint offsetting to bottom half of right sheet. A few areas of foxing, spot soiling. Very good. Decorative grapevine border with twelve vignettes of various points of interest across the pictured area, including the Capitol Building in Washington, Mexico City's cathedral and Willamette Falls, Oregon. Represents the most up-to-date information of the time, including the formation of the Washington, Kansas, and Minnesota Territories.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
