Remargined; middle fold restored. Faint general age toning. Text in English on verso, removed from Speed's world atlas, A Prospect of the Most Famous Parts of the World, first published in 1627. Very good. Represents California as an island; maps a speculative "Southerne Unknowne Land." Includes copious short notes on European exploration. Depicts the celestial hemispheres, figures representing the four elements, celestial phenomena such as lunar and solar eclipses, and portraits of four early explorers who circumnavigated the globe: Magellan, Drake, Cavendish, and van Noort. First state, with the imprint of George Humble at foot. One of the earliest English-language maps.
