James Kirkwood. Terrestrial Globe on Wooden Stand. [Edinburgh: second quarter of the 19th century]. The maker's escutcheon reads: "Kirkwood's Terrestrial Globe Containing the Whole of The Latest Discoveries and Geographical Improvement Also the tracks of The Most Celebrated Circumnavigators." Eighteen-inch diameter globe on three-legged mahogany stand with brass casters, measuring fifty inches tall. One small piece of missing veneer in the outer retaining ring, a three-inch wide indentation southeast of Australia and evidence of restoration to the western half of North America. Mellow patina to the varnished paper surface. Globe rotates freely with the insertion of shims to counter wear to the retaining ring guides. Very good, restored.
