    Description

Jacob van Meurs' Excellent Map of Africa

Jacob van Meurs. Africae Accurata Tabula. [Amsterdam]: Jacob van Meurs, [1668 or 1670]. One of two identical issues of this famous map, the first appeared in Olfert Dapper's Naukeurige beschrijvinge der Afrikaensche of 1668 or John Ogilby's Africa of 1670. Hand-colored (presumed later hand-coloring). Approximately 18 x 22.75 inches. Some toning and several creases (with some tears along some creases), some tape reinforcement along the verso, upper margin renewed. A very good example of this map.

    More Information:

There are several points of interest to this map. The first is that the Nile is shown incorporating the ancient idea that it springs from the two lakes of Zaire and Zafflan, it is one of the earliest maps to clearly delineate the separate countries in Africa, and it has two decorative cartouches (the first depicts two natives along with angels, and the other depicts Neptune and his court). It is characteristic of other maps of the period with its use of detail: there are topographical features, many place names, and illustrations of wild animals.

    Tooley, Africa, p. 87.
