    California as an Island

Hubert Jaillot. Amerique Septentrionale divisée en ses principales parties... [Paris: 1674]. Two-page engraved map of North America showing California as an Island. Hand-coloring, possibly later; imprint area of approximately 34 x 21 inches, sheet matted and framed with an overall size of 36 x 47 inches. Each leaf folded vertically and joined at the center. Edge wear with small closed marginal tears, center fold lightly worn with slight paper loss to "Terres Arcticques," negligible foxing and only minor soiling to image area. Frame wear and unobtrusive blemish to glass. Very good, not inspected outside of frame.

    More Information:

"Jaillot had [the maps] engraved on a larger scale with the greatest care and exactitude, and they form the basis of the greater part of the atlases issued by him... Jaillot's maps are in large handsome format, finely printed on the best paper, the titles and scales of miles within elaborate and large cartouches, usually depicting the characteristic costumes and products of the country delineated, and some have inset views. In ordinary examples the maps themselves were coloured in outline and the cartouches left plain but copies for special clients were fully coloured and illumined with gold." - Tooley, Maps and Map-Makers, page 41.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
