    Description

Gregor Reisch. [Untitled World Map]. Freiburg: 1503. Original Ptolemaic woodcut map of the world from the Margarita Philosophica. Single sheet, (16 x 11.125 inches; 406 x 283 mm. (sight)). Matted and framed for an overall size of 23.5 x 18.75 inches. Extensive paper repairs, renewing the the left margin; non-archival repairs to closed tears, causing discoloration to two of the windheads, one extending well into Africa; fold-lines and other wrinkles, some minor fold separation (potentially addressed by some sort of backing causing discoloration), other short closed tears perpendicular to creases; several small and faint stains. Dealer label affixed to the lower left corner of the glass, peeling and leaving residue. Good, not examined out of frame. "Here we find the first hint of knowledge of Columbus discoveries on a printed map," Suarez, Shedding the Veil, 10.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
