    Hand-Colored Atlas Maps

    George W. Colton. Colton's Atlas of the World, Illustrating Physical and Political Geography. Vol. I - North and South America. [and:] Vol. II -Europe, Asia, Africa, Oceana, etc.. New York: J.H. Colton and Company, 1856. Two large folio volumes. Additional engraved title page in volume one and engraved frontispiece in volume two, a total of ninety-seven single-page and five double-page maps, most of which are hand-colored. Bound in quarter black leather over brown cloth covered boards with blind stamped border designs, titles and illustration in gilt on front boards (same completely blind stamped on rear boards), gilt titles and rules on spines. Boards rubbed, soiled, and color faded; corner's bumped, spines with leather tears and partially opened; endpapers with small holes and surface paper loss from biopredation, pages and plates lightly toned around margins, some foxing, occasional soiling, few marginal dampstains. First volume: front board detached, rear board detaching, leather loss on spine with minimal affect to title, tape repair to front free endpaper. Second volume: front joint cracked, minor leather loss at foot of spine, holograph ink name on upper right corner of title page. Otherwise a very good two volume atlas in damaged bindings.
