First edition. With a beautiful calligraphic presentation inscription on the flyleaf: "Thomas B. Johnston / From / His Brother / Alexander. / 1844". Thomas Johnston's armorial bookplate is mounted to the front pastedown. Folio. [10] pages; 46 double-page plates of hand-colored maps, as called for. Eleven page index laid-in back. Contemporarily bound in hard-grain morocco lavishly decorated with ornate gilt rules and floral devices. Titles and gilt decoration stamped in compartments between five raised bands on the spine. All edges gilt. Marbled endpapers. Modest shelf-wear along the extremities, the corners and spine ends exhibiting the most wear. Front joint just starting; contents bright and unmarked, a beautiful copy in near fine condition. The North American map and the U.S. map both show Texas as an independent country.
