Abraham Ortelius. Islandia. [Antwerp: circa 1585]. Early map of Iceland, from a Latin volume of Ortelius's Theatrum Orbis Terrarum. Single sheet, two pages (17.625 x 22.375 inches; 448 x 567 mm.). Colored; with text on verso. Repair at middle fold. Minor toning, soiling. Very good. Richly colored and highly decorated. One of the most famous early maps of Iceland and the most accurate of its time, drawing on local sources. Depicts Hekla in the midst of eruption, mountains, fjords, ice floes and all known settlements up to that time. Represents a variety of fauna, including polar bears at the upper right, and a catalogue of mythical sea creatures, some fanciful and some based on real creatures, including whale, walrus and seahorse.
