A Venerable Copy of the French Edition of Ortelius' Renowned Atlas

Abraham Ortelius. Anvers: Philippe Galle, 1598. Oblong octavo (4.5 x 6 inches; 114 x 152 mm). 172 unnumbered pages. With woodcut printer's device on title-page, woodcut historiated initials, and 74 (of 123) engraved maps (i.e., lacking leaves A1, A8, C6-D2, E7-E8, F3-F8, G2, G8-H4, H7-8, I6-K1, K5-K7, L1, L8-M7, N2-N4, O8-P1, P3-P4). Near-contemporary blond vellum professionally rebacked and conserved with four restored leather ties at board edges. Boards beginning to splay. Minor shelf wear and discoloration to boards. Light toning throughout, a few instances of marginal soiling. A few leaves (most noticeably the final five leaves) built up and with professional marginal restoration. Overall a very good copy. A venerable copy of the French edition of Ortelius' renowned little atlas. A scarce title in and of itself, complete copies of Oretlius' Epitome of the Theatre of the World are exceedingly rare because the engraved sixteenth-century maps, prized for their detail, were often excised by subsequent owners -- a fact demonstrated by the number of standalone 1598 Ortelius maps that have been at auction in the past two decades. The present copy is most likely in its original, near-contemporary binding and has been professionally restored; and although it is missing more than several maps as is often the case, it is in better and more complete condition than most copies we have seen.
