    Description

    Early Engraving of Landmark
    Double-Hemisphere World Map

[World Map]. Rumold Mercator. Orbis terrae compendiosa descriptio. [Geneva]: 1587 (possibly later). Single-page engraved map after the 1569 original by Gerard Mercator, the cartographer's widely influential father. Sheet measures approximately 20.5 x 13.25 inches. One horizontal and five vertical creases, as issued. Lower margin cut unevenly, other edges trimmed, with shaving of vertical edges of plate indentation but with no loss of ink. Paper very lightly toned, with minor soiling and a few small splashes, primarily visible on verso, some fold separation, including approximately two-inch tear at lower margin, old paper repairs to tears along lower edge and where folds meet, cloth tape from former matte at two left corners of verso, with trace evidence of bruising from removal of another at bottom right, later catalog description affixed to lower margin. Very good.
