[Maps]. Map of the Region Adjacent to the Bay of San Francisco. New York: 1873. Large lithographed map with original hand-coloring.

    More Information:

Large lithographed map with vibrant original hand-coloring (42.25 x 35.75 inches; 1,073 x 908 mm.). Two joined sheets, mounted side-by-side on linen. Rolled, some wear, light soiling. Very good.

Perhaps the finest and most detailed nineteenth-century survey of the Bay Area, including Napa and Sonoma. Also shown in its early, undeveloped state, is Silicon Valley, nearly two decades before the founding of Stanford University.

This is one of the most significant maps produced by the California Geological Survey (1860-1874), an ambitious (but ultimately unfinished) project to map the entire state to the most accurate measurements of the day. The innovative mapping techniques used on this map (and other maps by Whitney and Hoffmann) would become the standard of the U. S. Geological Survey for the Western States.
