    North America's Atlantic Coastline

[Map]. Johann B. Homann. Virginia Marylandia et Carolina in America septentrionali Brittannorum industria excultae, from Novus Norimbergae, ca. 1714.

Copper-engraved map, with full color in outline by hand and watercolor wash. 21 x 24.75 inches. Modest toning and surface soiling, minor repairs to verso, chip on left side, else, good.

The map shows Atlantic coastline from Long Island to just south of Cape Feare in Carolina. It locates and names Indian settlements. The map also shows the imaginary Apalache Lacus in Florida. The extremely complex and decorative cartouche depicts the wonders, riches, and opportunities awaiting settlers in the New World. The map was intended to promote German emigration to North America.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
