Map of New England, With Cape Cod Shown as an Island

[Map]. Johann B. Homann. Nova Anglia Septentrionalis Americae Implantata Anglorumque coloniis florentissima, ca. 1730.

Copper-engraved map, with full color in outline by hand and watercolor wash. 19.25 x 23 inches . Closely trimmed on all sides, mounted on paper, repaired weakness at central fold on verso, modest toning, museum stamp on the front, else, good.

The map shows present day New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine. Indian settlements are located and named. Much of the information was copied from Dutch and French maps. Among the map's many errors is an oversized Boston Harbor and Cape Cod shown as an island. The decorative cartouche at the lower right pictures an Indian with a bow and a European with weapons, tools, and other goods.
