The "Buffalo Map" -- WIth an Excellent View of the Mississippi River Valley

[Map]. Johann B. Homann. Amplissima Regions Mississipi seu Provinciae Ludovicianae a R. P. Ludovico Hennepin francisc. miss. in America Septentrionali Anno 1687 detectae. nunc Gallorum coloniis et auctionem negotiis toto orbe celeberrimae, from Neuer Atlas, ca. 1720.

Copper-engraved map, with full color in outline by hand and watercolor wash. The map is 19.75 x 22.5 inches. Closely trimmed at the top and sides, mounted on paper, tape on verso, central fold, modest toning, else, good.

This map pictures the Great Lakes and eastern Canada and shows the Gulf Coast and Florida. Good detail of the Rio Grande, central Texas with Indian tribes, forts, and rivers. It provides an excellent view of the Mississippi River Valley with French forts on the Missouri and Ohio Rivers. A famous map based largely on LaSalle's explorations but giving credit to Father Antoine Hennepin, a Franciscan missionary who explored the upper Mississippi and was captured and lived among the Sioux. He was first to describe Niagara Falls, and there is a vignette view below the title cartouche with the falls and a beaver colony. This map is called the Buffalo Map for its view of a bison with an Indian family lower right.
