[Atlas]. F. W. Beers. Atlas of New York and Vicinity. New York: F. W. Beers, A. D. Ellis & G. G. Soule, 1867. First edition of Beers' highly regarded atlas, this copy complete (some copies of this atlas were issued with some maps lacking). Folio. Approximately 17.5 x 14.25 inches. [iii], 62 (numbered on rectos only), [10, lithographic views, printed on rectos only] pages. With twelve lithographic maps printed on onionskin paper inserted throughout and reckoned within pagination. With all sixty-one hand-colored lithographic maps and uncolored lithographic views. Publisher's quarter brown morocco over cloth boards. Boards paneled in blind, front cover lettered in gilt. Front board nearly detached, rear hinge starting, spine headcap chipped, a short tear to tailcap, some wear to spine, boards with soiling and wear (including marginal dampstaining), front free endpaper and first two leaves (text only) creased with a few small chips at creases, some toning to pages at margins, some faint dampstaining to pages at fore-edge (generally not affecting maps). Embossed stamp of Kettner & Walker, Bookbinders on lower corner of front free endpaper. Generally a good copy of this popular atlas.

    More Information:

This volume is more than simply an atlas; the maps contain locations of private homes as well as businesses (business directories are on several leaves). As mentioned earlier, many atlases were issued without all maps: "Beers tailored the contents of the atlases carefully. He prepared 137 maps for the area he called 'New York City and Vicinity' but no one atlas had more than 61, and one had as few as 36" (McCorkle).
