Twenty Manuscript Pages by Zane Grey of His Short Story, The Call on the County

Zane Grey. The Call on the County. [N.p., n.d., ca. 1908]. Twenty manuscript pages, being an early draft of the complete short story. Nine pages are typewritten and bear Grey's pencil markings or notes, and the remaining eleven pages are entirely in his manuscript hand. Mainly rectos only (there is a manuscript leaf with some material on the verso, which Grey crossed out). Each leaf is numbered at the top in pencil. Typed leaves approximately 8.5 x 11 inches; manuscript leaves are approximately 12.5 x 7.75 inches. Leaves are uniformly toned, with horizontal creases, a few small chips and short tears. Still, near fine.

As best as we can tell, this short story wasn't published until 2001, in Rangle River: Stories of the West (Five Star Publishers). About this story, Grey wrote in his diary, beginning with the December 16, 1908 entry: "Sent 'THE CALL ON THE COUNTY' to Harpers. I thought over this story for a year. Planned and wrote it in one week; waited three weeks, reconstructed and rewrote it in three days. It is a sad and gloomy story." Then, in the December 21, 1908 entry: "Mr. Hitchcock wrote to me that he did not think the gloom and squalor of THE CALL ON THE COUNTY, was justified by any moral or climax or point of the story." March 24, 1909: "MS has been refused by Harpers, Scribners, & Century. I shall keep it for a while." (L. Tom Perry Special Collections, Harold B. Lee Library, Brigham Young University).

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
