Shipwright's Account Book Belonging to Ellery Records, containing over 150 pages dating between May 1832 and March 1871. The book is composed of handwritten accounts kept by Ellery Records, a New Bedford, Massachusetts, shipwright. The accounts includes the names of various ships during the near-forty year period, including the Archer, the Moctezuma (see lot 34057), the George Washington, the schooner Richmond, and many more. Nearly every page of the account book includes five columns: the first contains the month; the second contains the day; the third contains the numbers of "Days on" a particular ship; the fourth contains the name of the ship; and the fifth contains the value of the day's work. All entries appear to be either struck-through or marked "Paid".

Throughout the nineteenth century, New Bedford was one of America's most important whaling ports. Ellery Records was successful enough as a shipwright to build an attractive house on Maxfield Street when he was only twenty-five. The house, built just a few blocks from the harbor, was finished in 1833 (the first page of accounts shows dates in 1832 when work was done on his house). Records lived in that house until his death in 1898. His name appears on page eight ("Brigg Clarice [?] to Elery Records"). Marbled boards (8" x 13") with some foxing throughout.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
