Rod McKuen. Manuscript Notebook. With Passages Dated from 1973-2003.

    More Information:

From the Estate of Rod McKuen.

Black leather bound "Hermes/ Paris" blank book with gilt initials "R.M" on front inside cover. Approximately 180 thick paper leaves, most still blank.

One folded note and two yellow lined pieces of paper in holograph ink, taped onto blank pages.

The first fifteen pages are hand numbered and begin with a diary entry from "4 Jan 73" "Slept two hours - washed/ promptly at twelve - up since./ Writing thank you notes to friends who sent/ presents...."

The rest of the pages are unnumbered and end with a lyric dated "11.16.03", which starts "Once upon a time is how/ the tale begins/ and in memory its the way/ each story ends...."

The contents are reminiscent to those of a "commonplace book" and include diary entries, poems or lyrics, reflections on his own life, an afterword for his collection of poems An Outstretched Hand, a list of movies, a list of deceased friends with a newspaper clipping laid in, a satirical poem "On Hearing Ned Rorem has released his newest book 'Knowing When to Stop'", and more.

Covers scuffed and lightly soiled, leather tab along front hinge is coming loose from first page; otherwise in very good condition.
