    Description

    Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Renoir." One page (of a bifolium) in French, with a canceled postal cover, 5.25" x 8.25", n.p.; Sunday [October 4, 1885]. In this short letter to his friend and most important patron, Paul Bérard, Renoir writes [English translation], "Despite my desire for a party, I have to accept it won't happen. There are too many sickly people in my family and Durand [Paul Durand-Ruel (1831-1922), a French art dealer?] who has not yet [illegible] but who has prepared his departure for America. None of this is very serious and it does not preoccupy me but still I cannot abandon the spot. He is taking a lot of paintings and I believe it will be chaos. Aside from these concerns my health is fine. I have gotten back to work without enthusiasm since I am alone and dreading the misery of winter. At least it will not be the first. There is the situation for now. You must still be shooting at rabbits which is better, I dare say, than to let oneself [illegible]. I will end by saying that I will not be voting for the patriot Derout....Renoir."

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), commonly known as Auguste Renoir, was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. Inspired by the style and subject matter of previous modern painters Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Edouard Manet (1831-1883), Renoir was known for his works celebrating feminine beauty and especially feminine sensuality.

Paul-Antoine Bérard (1833-1905) was a banker, foreign affairs attaché, and Renoir's most important patron. The two met in 1878 and became close friends.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds; otherwise very good.
