Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Autograph Letter Signed."Renoir." Three pages (of a bifolium) in French, with a canceled postal cover, 4.25" x 6.5", Nice; [January 25, 1914]. In this letter to the French art dealer and collector Ambroise Vollard in Paris, Renoir writes [English translation],
"I'll be settled in Cagnes [Côte d'Azur] next Saturday so if the sculptor must come let it be as soon as possible. If there is room he will stay at Madame André's at the Logis in Cagnes. He should write in advance. There are other inns however. Naturally I will only give him the time it takes to express my thoughts. I have a male and female model, pretty enough, that is why I suggest he does not dilly-dally. If the large statue is not going well he has the clock to do, so he will not lack work. That said I will not participate. He could stay at the farm but he will be able to move more freely in Cagnes. I think that is all for now."
Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), commonly known as Auguste Renoir, was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. Inspired by the style and subject matter of previous modern painters Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Edouard Manet (1831-1883), Renoir was known for his works celebrating feminine beauty and especially feminine sensuality.
Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) was a French art dealer who is regarded as one of the most important in French contemporary art at the beginning of the twentieth century. He provided exposure and emotional support to numerous then-unknown artists, including Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), and Renoir. He was also an avid art collector and publisher. Renoir painted a portraits of Vollard in 1908 and 1917.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.View More Testimonials
