    Description

    Pierre-Auguste Renoir. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Renoir." One page (of a bifolium) in French on Renoir's personal stationary, 4.25" x 6.5", Cagnes-sur-Mer [France]; April 19, 1914. In this letter, written from his farm Les Collettes close to the Mediterranean coast, Renoir authorizes his friend Ambroise Vollard, "painting merchant" and "owner of my 3 models of sculpture... to reproduce them in all manner." This was probably written for and given to Vollard to show that he [Vollard] had Renoir's endorsement.

Pierre-Auguste Renoir (1841-1919), commonly known as Auguste Renoir, was a French artist who was a leading painter in the development of the Impressionist style. Inspired by the style and subject matter of previous modern painters Camille Pissarro (1830-1903) and Edouard Manet (1831-1883), Renoir was known for his works celebrating feminine beauty and especially feminine sensuality.

Ambroise Vollard (1866-1939) was a French art dealer who is regarded as one of the most important in French contemporary art at the beginning of the twentieth century. He provided exposure and emotional support to numerous then-unknown artists, including Paul Cézanne (1839-1906), Pablo Picasso (1881-1973), Paul Gauguin (1848-1903), Vincent van Gogh (1853-1890), and Renoir. He was also an avid art collector and publisher. Renoir painted a portraits of Vollard in 1908 and 1917.

Condition: The letter has one horizontal fold; otherwise good.

The pre and post sales experience was wonderful and flawless. Heritage has the best in-house operation I have ever seen and their people are not only professional but fun to work with, especially Steve C.

As for Heritage's online system… Yes the interface is more complex than what we are used to with SAN but what is behind that interface is amazing for sellers and buyers alike. It is real time and for a real serious auction buyer there is nothing better in the auction industry, bar none.
