Paul Cezanne. Autograph Letter Signed With Sketches. ALS. "Paul Cezanne." One page in French, with two sketches, 5.5" x 8.75", Aix; October 19, 1906.
Paul Cézanne's last letter, written three days before his death. [The last published in his Correspondence is one from two days before, October 17, and is addressed to the same person on the same subject. It was reproduced in facsimile in that work.] We know that Cézanne, in the process of painting caught a chill, and was brought back to his house in a local tradesman's cart. The next day, going to work in the garden on a portrait, he was taken ill again. He still had the energy to write this letter to his supplier of painting articles, but the writing, although legible, is evidence of his enfeeblement. Basically, he is asking his supplier for 10 of some kind of lacquer. "I have not yet received a response. What is going on? Sending you, sir, my regards."

The two sketches represent the profile of a man's face, possibly a self-portrait, at the top left hand corner, and a sketch of several streets, possibly in Aix.

Paul Cézanne (1839-1906) was a French artist and Post-Impressionist painter whose work laid the foundations of the transition from the 19th-century conception of artistic endeavor to a new and radically different world of art in the 20th century.

In this very moving document, written just days before his death, Cézanne is still asking for his paints.

Condition: The letter has some surface soiling and ink transference, otherwise good.
