John Steinbeck Tortilla Flat Typescript. [New York: circa 1935]. Original manuscript, 8.5" x 11", 232 leaves paginated A-D, 1-230, with pages 4 and 5 on the same leaf and missing page 203. Text on rectos only. Loose sheets housed in a green cardstock folio; front with paper label from literary agent pasted down, with title and author typewritten above publisher's information. Holograph printing instructions by the publisher in pencil scattered throughout.

One of Steinbeck's great "California novels" about a group of Hispanic locals living near Monterey in an area known as Tortilla Flat. This work was his first critical success, winning the California Commonwealth Club's Gold medal. With Covici Friede's publication of this book, Steinbeck and Pascal Covici began a long and mutually successful relationship. Though not so much of a work of social criticism as Steinbeck's later books, it was probably the genial manner in which he depicted the down-and-out characters of Tortilla Flat that helped Steinbeck expand his readership. The book was later adapted into an excellent film version in 1942, starring Spencer Tracy and John Garfield.

Condition: Light tonight throughout. Chipping and creasing to page edges and corners, with some small tears in places. Soiling and rubbing from pencil marks throughout. As mentioned, missing page 203. Some pages have a small hole punched into the top right. Creasing from flattened folds. Green folio has separated at the spine, with some fraying and tears at edges. The paper label has paper loss at multiple edges.
