    Description

    Jean-Claude Delamétherie. Autograph Letter Signed.
"La Matherie." Three pages in French with an integral address sheet, 6" x 7.75", n.p.; n.d [circa 1790s]. Addressed to the French mineralogist François Pierre Nicolas Gillet de Laumont (1747-1834), who in 1784 was appointed inspector of mines, Delamétherie writes in support of Laumont's arduous journey and informs him that his previous letter never arrived and thus knows nothing of Laumont's travels and impressions, but knows that Laumont will fill him in with all the details. Presented here is most of the letter in English translation.

"You tell me that [few lines illegible] of the veins [illegible] different from the one you obtained in Brittany. That does not surprise me because I do not believe that the veins are [illegible] in general layers but rather in specific layers that, in each county, have [illegible] in a uniform manner while in other places they have changed in different ways, but we will have time to reflect on all this. The [traveler?] needs only eyes and very observant eyes. It is [illegible] in one's study that one consolidates the facts later on.

We have nothing new in [illegible]. If you have the opportunity to read the journal of physics in your [illegible] it will inform you of all that has been going on. The August and September issues contain extracts from the dissertations by Misters Vandermonde [Alexandre-Théophile Vandermonde (1735-1796), a French mathematician, musician and chemist], Monge [Gaspard Monge (1746-1818), a French mathematician] and Berthollet [Claude Louis Berthollet (1748-1822), a French chemist] [illegible] iron, steel and plumbagin [a chemical compound]. These scientists want to [illegible] a more or less large quantity of charcoal for what they [illegible] stable air [in text "air fixe"], and that stable air [illegible] produced by the combination of charcoal and pure air. I concluded from this that following [illegible] the charcoal [illegible] also [find it?] in all the [illegible] since [we or they] could not [illegible] of stable air. That is what I did by doing [illegible] with the [illegible] a great number of metallic... made by other processes....

When it comes to decomposition of [illegible] there is nothing [illegible] but I am going to attempt new experiments. I now have a cute little laboratory....

Goodbye Monsieur Laumont, do not strain yourself and do not wait for snowfall before you return. You know what joy it will give me to see you again."

Jean-Claude Delamétherie (1743-1817) was a French mineralogist, geologist, and paleontologist. He edited the Journal de physique, de chimie, d'histoire naturelle et des arts for many years, and was the first to systematically describe numerous minerals.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, paper loss on page 3 and the integral address sheet where the wax seal was broken when letter opened; one brown spot that does not affect text; otherwise good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
