    Description

Jacques Rivière and Alain-Fournier. Autograph Letters Signed.
Four page bifolium for both letters (two pages each), 4.25" x 7." 1) Jacques Rivière ALS. "J. Rivière." Two pages, n.p.; n.d. In this letter to an unnamed correspondent, Rivière writes [English translation], "I kept an NRF [La Nouvelle Revue Française] for you and thought of giving it to you when you return. It is the one I sent you yesterday. It looks like you will have to use your stamps and write to us. I have also sent you an Art et Décoration to distract you a bit. It is not every day one finds cause for laughter. I only have that one for both you and André so sort it out amongst yourselves. Anyway, it is only interesting for someone who needs a distraction. I am in a terrible state of mental fatigue. I am incapable of doing anything and spend days in depression, huddled over my papers with a splitting headache. I have multiple projects in the works and cannot write a single line. A while ago I received a hysterical letter from Bourdelle [Antoine Bourdelle (1861-1929), an influential and prolific French sculptor and teacher] in which he talks about my writings as a 'well-formed piece of work' and referred to me as a 'simple man.' He asked that I write about his upcoming exhibition next year and I accepted. It will probably appear in Art et Décoration. Besnard [?] has also written me with great enthusiasm and asks that I visit him. Also, Willy [Henry Gauthier-Villars (1859-1931) or Willy, his nom-de-plume, was a French fin de siècle writer and music critic] wrote about my Debussy in his lettre de l'Ouvreuse [l'Ouvreuse was an alias used by Willy]."

    2) Alain-Fournier ALS. "Henri." Two pages, n.p.; n.d. Writing to an unnamed correspondent, Alain-Fournier writes [English translation], "Although I am quite pleased to be doing this [illegible] Bourdelle, I regret for you that you did not find the time to finish it. With regards to Paris-Journal I am deeply hesitant and repulsed. They paid me 26.50 for that huge collection of interviews with Puvis de Chavannes! I also have an intense impulse to ream out le grand Chichet [?] who I am otherwise have sympathy for and who calls me son petit. You know I am doing a courrier littéraire that pays me next to nothing and gets me the consideration of all the literary merchants and the hatred of L'Intransigeant. I do not know if I will have the courage to continue with this. I will take refuge in England where I can find peace to do what I have to do....

Could you not find me a farmer in a remote area, during one of your tours, with a daughter to marry off?"

Jacques Rivière (1886-1925) was a French writer, critic, and editor who was a major force in the intellectual life of France in the period immediately following World War I. He edited La Nouvelle Revue Française from 1919 until his death.

Alain-Fournier (1886-1914) was the pseudonym of Henri-Alban Fournier, a French author and soldier. He was the author of the novel, Le Grand Meaulnes (1913), considered a classic of French literature.

Condition: Letter has usual folds and has separation at crease at the bottom of the letter; otherwise good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
