    Description

Henri Matisse. Copy of Typewritten Letter and Handwritten Corrections on Draft of Article.
This lot is comprised of 1) One page typewritten draft in French, 8" x 14.5", of an article about Matisse titled [English translation] "One hour with Matisse: Preparing his chapel's décor," with Matisse's handwritten comments directly on the draft. The article pertains to Chapel Notre-Dame du Rosaire in honor of Saint Dominique [located in Vence, France]. Matisse was soon to be 80 years old. Most of Matisse's comments on the draft are not legible but the most important one is in response to a question about a "new orientation" in his art, one that is religious. His written response is that he did not need to adopt a new orientation because, in fact, his entire life's work was always inspired by his religious sentiment around the mystery of Nature. 2) One page carbon copy of unsigned typewritten letter in French, 8.25" x 10.5", Vence; February 15, 1946. The letter, from Matisse to an unnamed correspondent, is unrelated to the chapel project. Matisse writes [English translation], "Here is what I can tell you about the exhibition of my paintings insofar as it stands out from my other exhibitions. Each painting, from its humblest beginnings to the point when I completed it, went through successive modifications, all of which were made on the same canvas, that is to say, the canvas upon your wall today. The photographs accompanying each painting show its development. They offer the only testimony of the painting's successive stages of development. I took them in order to keep track of the logical development of my paintings."

Henri Émile Benoît Matisse (1869-1954), an artist known his expressiveness of color, is considered the most important French artist of the 20th century. He was a draughtsman, book illustrator, graphic artist, and sculptor, but was known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century, responsible for significant developments in painting and sculpture.

Condition: The draft article has two horizontal folds and consists of two separate pages pasted together; otherwise good. The carbon copy typed letter is on onionskin paper with folds; there are several holes where typewriter keys pushed through paper; edges creased; otherwise good.
