Typescript of One of the First
    Cthulhu Mythos

    H. P. Lovecraft [American author, 1890-1937]. Original Typescript for The Festival. 598 Angell St., Providence R.I. [n.d., ca. 1923]. Twelve quarto leaves, rectos only. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. The first leaf is written entirely in pencil in Lovecraft's Hand: "The / Festival / by / H. P. Lovecraft." After this leaf are ten numbered typewritten leaves, and one final blank leaf. The complete story. With a few of the author's corrections or notations in ink. Leaves quite browned and worn, with edges chipped and with several tears. Leaves dampstained near the upper and right margins. Still, a very good example of an incredibly rare and fragile item. Relatively few manuscripts or typescripts by Lovecraft have appeared at auction in the last thirty years. This story, first published in Weird Tales in January, 1925 is "the first Mythos story to use witch-haunted Kingsport as a setting." (Lin Carter, Lovecraft: A Look Behind the Cthulhu Mythos). It is also one of the earliest works of fiction to discuss the Necronomicon. From the collection of Dr. Stuart David Schiff.

We had a wonderful time in New York during the October 2013 Historical Manuscripts auction that featured my mother’s papers collected during her tenure as Martin Luther King, Jr.’s secretary. In fact, the entire experience from beginning to end has been a pleasure.
