    H. G. Wells Writes a Friendly and Encouraging Letter to His Friend and Protégé, Naomi Mitchison

    H. G. Wells Autograph Note Signed. Two pages on one sheet of Wells' stationery [stationery is for his address in Westminster], written on recto and verso, 10.5 x 8.25 inches, Quai de Anteiul [written by hand], July 10, 1928. Wells writes: "Dear Naomi Mitchison I rarely read books unless if they have to do with my work & I put yours by until I flew to Paris via Salisbury [?]. Then I read it... but your book reads slowly & I got here with some yet left. But I shall find it hard to tell you how rich & lovely I find it & how greatly I admire the work you have done in it. You are a very fine person indeed & I respect you with all my heart. How are you [overleaf] & have things got happier for you? I come back to England for three or four weeks in June... But now my warmest salutations Yours H. G. Wells". Vertical and horizontal creases, sheet a bit toned and rubbed (especially at folds). Still, a good letter.
From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells.

    More Information:

Naomi Mitchison (Scottish novelist, poet and scientist, 1897-1999) was a vocal feminist and socialist, perhaps the best reason she moved in the same circles as Wells. Her works were considered controversial for their outspoken feminist point of view and her frank depiction of sexual matters and birth control. Her work as a science fiction novelist was heavily influenced by Wells.
