    H. G. Wells Offers American Serialization Rights
    to
    A Modern Utopia

    H. G. Wells Autograph Note Signed. One page, 7 x 4.5 inches, Sandgate, January 10, 1904. Written on rectos of two pages of Wells' stationery and addressed to the Editor of the North American Review. Wells writes: "Dear Sir/ I have in hand a piece of work that I think is particularly suitable for serialization in the North American. It is called A Modern Utopia & consists of eight chapters subdivided each into from six to eleven sections. It is, I think rather ingenious in device, consisting of Essays & Speculations upon the Utopia that will be [next page] possible under modern conditions of scientific & social knowledge, interspersed with the narrative of two men who actually visit the Utopia described. The way I get them there & back pleases me extremely. The thing is to be serialized in the Fortnightly Review in this country beginning next September. I think you would find it altogether more picturesque & [illegible] as clearly reasoned as Anticipations [previously serialized in the North American Review] Yours Sincerely H. G. Wells". One horizontal crease, paper slightly toned and thumbsoiled, two mounting "tabs" affixed to upper margin of verso of second page. Still, very good. From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells.
