    H. G. Wells Writes to His Publisher About the
    Furor Over the Novel,
    Ann Veronica

    H. G. Wells. Autograph Letter Signed. Two pages on Wells' stationery paper, 9 x 7 inches, Hampstead, [n.d.]. Wells writes: "My dear Unwin" [written to T. Fisher Unwin, the publisher of Ann Veronica "]. I don't see there's any need to be fussed about the attack on Ann Veronica. Often libraries will sell A. V. second hand - so much the better for your first have sales [?]. I recommend you to advertise this book, ignore the attacks, & put in every quote you can to say that the book is amusing, the heroine charming, the Goopes [?] funny &c. &c. There's a certain amount of private malice in these attacks... Lord! what a haul you must be making this time. Yours H. G. Wells." Vertical and horizontal folds, minor creasing at edges, left margins a bit worn with stubs affixed (apparently this letter had once been mounted into a book). Very good.
From the Larry McMurtry Collection of H. G. Wells.

    More Information:

When Ann Veronica was published in 1909, it created a scandal, due to the independence of the title character and her defiance of Edwardian customs and mores.
