    H. G. Wells Writes to His Agent about the Length
    of The Research Magnificent

    H. G. Wells Autograph Letter Signed. One page on Wells' stationery note paper, written on recto only, 10.5 x 8.25 inches, Little Easton Rectory, [n.d., but with publisher's "Received 17 Aug 14" ink stamp]. Addressed "Dear Colles [Maurice Colles, Wells' literary agent at the time] The length of The R. M. may be troubling you. It is difficult to cut History; the structure is too subtle. But there is a complete enough the [?] have content about 15,000 words beyond the point of which your copy ends. This could be made the end [?] of the serial. Vy [sic] sincerely yrs [sic] H. G. Wells". Macmillan published The Research Magnificent in book form in 1915. Vertical and horizontal creases, paper toned and mildly rubbed, ink stamp (mentioned above) and blue pencil notation. Still, a very good letter.
