    Ezra Pound. Typed Manuscript Poems.
Five pages, 7.75" x 11.5", n.p.; n.d. [circa 1930]. Typed at the top of page 1 is "Carnevali from French of Rimbaud." This page, in blue carbon ink, includes two translations by Pound of Carnevali's translations of Rimbaud's "Flowers" (Fleurs) and "Ancient" (Antique), with what appears corrections in Pound's hand.

The next four pages, numbered [1]-4, in black carbon ink, includes translations by Pound of Carnevali's translations of Rimbaud's "Wakes", "To one reason", and "Phrases." Verse III of "Wakes" and all of "To one reason" were published in the February 1931 edition of Poetry for "Wakes" verse III, and "To one reason." These may represent Pound's translations.

Pound's translation Verse III of Carnevali's translation of Rimbaud's "Wakes" reads:

"The lamps and the carpets of the wake make the noise of waves//in the night, along the rut and around the steerage.//The sea of the wake, such as the breast of Amèlie.//The tapestry, just at medium height, the wood of laces dyed//in emerald, where the turtle doves of the wake throw themselves."

Pound's translation of Carnevali's translation of "To one reason" reads"

"A hitting of your fingers on the drum shoots out all the sounds and begins the new harmony.//One of his steps, in the levy of new men and their mise-en-marche.//Your head turns: the new love! Your head turns back to its place; the new love!//Riddle with disaster, to begin with the time, sing to you those children. Raise never mind where the substance of our fortunes, and of our vows I beg you.//Having arrived from always, you will go everywhere."

Ezra Weston Loomis Pound (1885-1972) was an expatriate American poet and critic, and a major figure in the early modernist poetry movement. His contribution to poetry began with his development of Imagism, a movement derived from classical Chinese and Japanese poetry, stressing clarity, precision, concision, and economy of language. His works include Ripostes (1912), Hugh Selwyn Mauberley (1920) and the unfinished 120-section epic, The Cantos (1917-1969). Pound's translations represent a substantial part of his work. He began his career with translations of Occitan ballads and ended with translations of Egyptian poetry.

Emanuel Carnevali (1897-1942) was an Italian-American poet, who enjoyed a special celebrity among populist Modernist poets like William Carlos Williams and Carl Sandburg. He and Pound were friends. He published only one book, Tales of a Hurried Man (1925), in his lifetime, but it established him in avant-garde circles.

During the last twenty years of his short life, Carnevali suffered from ill health. During the late 1920s and early 1930s, Pound provided financial support to help him pay his bills and obtained for him translation jobs.

Condition: The page including the poems "Flowers" and "Ancient" is in brittle condition, weakening along the horizontal fold and paper loss along both edges (without affecting text). The other four pages are in good condition, with only impression made by a paper clip and a small tear at the top of page 4.
