    Edouard Vuillard. Autograph Letter Signed.
"E. Vuillard." One page post card letter in French, 4.25" x 5.5", Calvados [France]; [August 2, 1915]. In this post card letter to Misia Edwards, Vuillard writes [English translation],

"I've always been quite shy around you but the serenity and certainty of a perfect rapport quieted my awkward feelings. Now that we have not seen you in quite a while, I often wonder with bitterness if that rapport is the same as it was. Your letter is [illegible] to answer me. Oh, no! I do not find this thought ridiculous, I take it as a mark of your affection. I owe this joy, through you, to Beethoven's [illegible], melancholic just like everything he makes. But he also evokes so strongly the idea of reason and health, like you Misia, who has so much of it. Bonnard has told me wonderful things on that account though everyone sees through their eyes and that is how he likes to perceive people. That is wisdom and it is the only way for us all to get through this [life?], I envy him and wish we all could think that way. I succeed at times but not often enough, such as when the weather is gorgeous in that spot in Normandy where I find calm and easy living. But too often it torments me. Yet I was not keen on [illegible] that I could have become a [illegible] for my friends. I wish to know you peaceful and living happily. If you were here, I would not speak and I would have the same confidence as before that you would understand me perfectly."

Jean-Édouard Vuillard (1868-1940) was a French painter, decorative artist and printmaker.

Misia Edwards (1872-1950), born Maria Zofia Olga Zenajda Godebska, a pianist of Polish descent who hosted an artistic salon in Paris and, at the time, was married to Alfred Edwards. She was a patron and friend of numerous artists, for whom she regularly posed. She later married Catalan painter José-Maria Sert (1874-1945).

Condition: The post card letter is torn down the middle and repaired with tape; fair.
