    Edgar Degas. Autograph Letter Signed.

    More Information:

"Degas." Four pages bifolium with black mourning border, in French, 4.25" x 6.5", [Paris?]; n.d. [circa 1874-75]. In this letter to an unnamed correspondent, Degas writes, "Our friend Rouart [Henri Rouart (1833-1912), French industrialist, impressionist painter, and art collector whose portrait Degas painted in the mid-1870s.] sent me a telegraph right away to inform me of the good news. The culprit, Rousset [unknown], came to see me as radiant as he had been abashed. We did all we could for his morale. He is obviously very grateful and has asked me to tell you that this favor you are doing him inspires his utmost devotion for you. You were impatient the other night when you were attempting to call on my affection for that animal (more than you actually cared to try, I think) I thought, despite not having much of a diplomatic streak, that the best was for me to stay quiet, though the issue saddened me, and wait. You must admit that you vindicated me in my approach. You are therefore not as mean as you seemed. Your way of showing that has been very delicate, in fact. When I see you again, which our friend Rouart will bring about, I will tell you better how touched I am."

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist.

Condition: Except for the usual folds, the letter is in very good condition.
