    Description

    Edgar Degas. Autograph Letter Signed.
"Degas." Two pages (of a bifolium) in French, with black mourning border, 4.25" x 6.75", [Paris?]; Tuesday, [circa 1874-1875]. This letter is addressed to "My dear Deschamps," but it is not clear if it is written to Louis Deschamps (1842-1902), the French painter or the London art gallery manager and art dealer Charles William Deschamps (1848-1908). It is probably the latter due to Degas's reference to Deschamps's London home in one of his letters. In this letter, Degas writes [English translation], "Any news? If you can, and I need you to be able to, send me 50 [illegible] more for the next shipment. I am to move and will need money in [illegible]. The exhibition has begun (ours, of course). There are mentions and certain interest in which coordination [illegible] is not absent. Next year we will be completely right. I write to you in haste. I am working a lot. I'm counting on you, my dear friend."

Edgar Degas (1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially identified with the subject of dance; more than half of his works depict dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, he rejected the term, preferring to be called a realist.

Charles Deschamps was the nephew and assistant of the art dealer Ernest Gambart. Deschamps moved to London at the siege of Paris in 1870, became Secretary of the Society of French Artists.

Condition: The letter has the usual folds, otherwise very good.

This was my first time dealing with an auction house, and I am 100% completely impressed with Heritage. There is not an aspect of this process that I have a critique for.
