Cole Younger: An Important Cora McNeill-Typed Transcript of an 1888 Interview Concerning the Gad Hill, Iowa, Train Robbery, with Annotations in Her Hand. "'It was this way', he (Cole) said. 'It was that Iowa train robbery, of which we were charged and of which we were wholly innocent, that brought us into this prison (Stillwater) for life. As Jim said, we were then prepared to go to Texas and be rid of the hounding and persecution in Missouri, of which he has spoken. Had we gone our lives would have gone on and we would not have been driven into the straits that finally brought us into this prison.'"

Cole lays out their alibi for the crime, but it was widely attributed to the Youngers'. "After the tumult of the Iowa affair our plans were set at naught; we were called outlaws, but I never visited any civel [sic] officer in my life...We dared not go to Iowa voluntarily to answer the false charges, as we certainly would have been lynched..."

Younger suggests that the brothers then had no choice but to live as outlaws. It was these false charges, he claims, that led to their younger brother John being "killed in the road that day" in the famous Roscoe, Missouri, gunfight.

Whether one accepts or rejects the historical validity of Cole Younger's claims, this account gives a fascinating insight into the workings of his mind.

Probably typed by Cora in the 1890s from her notes. Three 8.5" x 11" pages, showing edge roughness but otherwise in good condition.
