"this working typescript of what I think is the best Hornblower story..."

    C. S. Forester. Hornblower and St. Elizabeth of Hungary. [n.p., n.d., ca. 1956]. Original carbon copy (and working typescript) of the original typescript with neat ink and pencil corrections (in another hand?). With a warm inscription by Forester to his close friend and literary agent on the title-page: "To A. D. Peters / this working typescript of what I / think is the best Hornblower story, / appropriately, because I could not have / had a better friend, nor he a more / grateful one. / C. S. Forester. February 1958". Quarto. Approximately 11 x 8.5 inches. Plain white paper. 76 leaves (rectos only). Title-page possibly added a bit later. Pages a bit toned, last several pages a bit wrinkled. All leaves bound into three-hole plain blue paper folder, with typed paper label on front. Some wear, soiling, and light dampstaining to folder (dampstaining not affecting leaves). Overall, a near fine item. From the John McLaughlin/Book Sail Collection.

    More Information:

This story appeared as the first story in the anthology, Hornblower in the West Indies (Michael Joseph, 1957). In this story, Hornblower learns of a plot of some of Napoleon's followers to free him from exile on St. Helena. Although he intercepts their ship, he can't stop them by force; he foils their plot by lying to them, telling them that Napoleon has died; when Hornblower returns to port, he discovers that Napoleon had actually died, thus ending the plot forever.

The recipient of this script, Augustus Dudley Peters (1892-1973), was Forester's literary agent and a film producer. His talent agency, A. D. Peters Agency, merged with Fraser and Dunlop Agency in 1989, becoming Peters Fraser and Dunlop (now known as PFD) and is one of the oldest literary and talent agencies in Great Britain. PFD still handles Forester's estate.
