    Description

    Augustin-Jean Fresnel. Autograph Letter Signed.
"A. Fresnel." Two pages in French, 7.75" x 10", Paris; January 15, 1827. Addressed to the Prefect of Vendée, about six months before his death, Fresnel writes concerning a miscommunication or misunderstanding around the placement of a reflecting light at an intersection, as well as a lightning rod; namely, the light and rod were not installed and the Prefect appears to have written to the Director of the civil engineering corps to complain about what he mistook as Fresnel's role in this. Fresnel's letter intends to clear up the confusion and absolve himself of responsibility for the delayed installation.

Augustin-Jean Fresnel (1788-1827) was a French civil engineer and physicist whose research in optics led to the almost unanimous acceptance of the wave theory of light from the late 1830s until the end of the 19th century. He is best known for inventing the catadioptric (reflective/refractive) Fresnel lens and for pioneering the use of "stepped" lenses to extend the visibility of lighthouses, saving countless lives at sea. He died of tuberculosis at the young age of 39.

Condition: The letter has usual folds and some creasing on the lower edge, but otherwise in good condition.
